Some more D&D 4e love, need to play more, and stupid weather

I am right in the middle of two writing projects: one an adventure using the 3.5 rules, and the other using 4e. Both are long and complicated projects that require a lot of planning to get things right. In terms of plot, I am enjoying writing the 3.5 adventure much more, because it is the final Crimson Codex adventures for the Xen'drik ( Read more... )

xendrik expeditions, rpga, 4e, rpgs, wizards of the coast, d&d

I do believe in the field of RPG adventure writing you start to lose your edge if you don't keep playing/DMing.

Absolutely true, sir!

So here's a question I mean in all sincerity: is some of the difference in the 4e-adventure-you-can't-talk-about and the 3.5 adventure the difference in level? I mean, from what I know about 4e so far, I've only seen the low level stuff, and I kind of assume you're working on low level adventures at the moment. Wasn't it always kind of harder to write a high level adventure than a low level adventure. (Or, heck, harder still to write an adventure that had to be scaled for 7 different ATLs?)

Do you think that's part of it? Or is 4e just going to be genuinely easier to write? 'Cause if so, I'm so there. ;)

Um, and you can always come down and play with us! We're having a con in New Haven next weekend... We've been in the high 60s low 70s this week here on the shoreline... and if it gets too warm, we just walk down to the water, where there's always a temperature drop due to the nice coastal breeze. We can get the guest room ready for you lickety split!

First, I like this avatar. You look very nice in that picture.

Second, I wanted to ask him that question too, but didn't want to seem contrary given my previous response to 4e in his journal.

Third, I created the term ATL. It tickles me to no end when I hear others use it. I think it's superior to APL.

Thanks! It's my author photo. ;) (We all look better air-brushed, no? *g*)

I know everyone's back to using APL now, but ATL's what I came up on, so to speak, so it's the way I think about balancing an adventure! ;)

We needed an implicit way to allow tables larger than 6 without openly saying so. It was a debate we wanted to avoid. The simple fact of the matter was in those first two years, we had many more players than we did judges. Tables of 7-10 players were common (I was the king of the 10-player table). The ATL calculation allowed a judge to determine the appropriate challenge level regardless of the number of players at the table.

Take that, LG! :P :)
