I think fans of D&D may consider this like getting to see a new Harry Potter book early, but gaming fans don't necessarily give a damn. There are plenty of other games on the market for us to play.
And to follow your metaphor, I see 4th edition much like the Deathly Hollows. If I had gotten to preview that book ahead of time, I wouldn't have purchased it, but waited to get it from the library for free.

Not everyone who is attending DDXP next week is looking forward to, or is excited about, the new edition of the D&D rules. There will be many people there, I am sure, playing D&D Minis, or playing other RPGA offerings, who could care less about 4th Edition.
To put it in perspective, tickets sales over previous years is up somewhere between 50% and 70%, the last I heard. On forums such as ENworld, a hangout for some of the most enthusiastic D&D players, people were talking about bringing mini-cameras and portable scanners so they could capture and leak as much information as possible to the D&D public.
So while there is enthusiasm and a definite interest in the new rules in the D&D community, some are unenthusiastic, or at least taking a wait-and-see approach, toward the new rules.
I'll still be there though. I'll still be running games, and I'm still anticipating what should be an exciting and interesting event (for most people).
