another birthday gone

Oct 08, 2007 00:18

So it appears that I (and BJ, for that matter) have, in fact, had another birthday. Thanks to everyone who sent cards/facebook messages/e-mails/IMs, all that good stuff. It was a pretty uneventful day... BJ made me corned beef, and we basically just hung out and played video games. =^) I was kind of disappointed to find out that the used ( Read more... )

It's a pretty little girls school !

Sorry, that was random, though a fine classic example of syntactic ambiguity. I was just feeling gleeful because I just got done rambling about activated meanings in a comment, and then I read your post and was embraced by linguistics. =)

"Working on" might not be a constituent, but "working" is. I am thinking now about how in Loglan you have, always, relationships in the primitives -- turka doesn't mean "work," but rather "X works/is a worker," or really "... works on/at ... with goal ...", where the blanks in the sentence need to be filled with stated or implied descriptions.

So you need a sentence to get meaning. Which jibes with Eco. =)

Well... (since this is one thing that I did just cover in my class notes, so forgive me if I'm being overly pedantic) "working" may or may not be a constituent, depending on the sentence that it's in, because "working" as a verb is part of more than one subcatagorization frame. In "I am working" it's a constituent, but in "I am working on my homework" it isn't. Though you're right that "working on" would not be a constituent.

I haven't studied any man-made languages as of yet. And, in fact, most of the linguistics professors that I've talked to about them have some rather nasty things to say about at least some of them. No one seems to be a fan of Esperanto, at least. =^) And I'm very tired so even with your example I'm not sure what you mean by "relationships in the primitives". I'll come back to it tomorrow. *dies*

Happy Belated Birthday! You'd think after all these years I'd learn and know it was in the fall and not the spring. *facepalm*

I totally agree with you on D.O.A. I enjoyed it for the sheer 'sit back and don't worry about a plot' factor. And yes, Devon Aoki is utterly scrumptious.

Are you on facebook? I'm kind of new to it so if you know how to search for me, please do!

hehe, thanks. ^_^

I'm on facebook--I just sent you an invitation. At least, I hope it was you. There seem to be a few different people with your name on there, but I think I picked the right one. =^)
