Wearing Purple

I didn't see the 'Wear Purple' thing spread as much here as other places, but I'll post my thoughts here anyway because I'm sure everyone's at least heard of it and I want to see if anyone thinks like me.

I don't like set days to 'remember' things or 'honor' things. I never have and I never will. I've said it before. I'll say it until I'm blue in ( Read more... )

I absolutely agree with you on the day of purple seemingly excluding other queer folk. I can also see where you're coming from regarding the trend setting of purple and why you wonder about it's true impact. However, I do think it is important to have a visible representation of the tragedies that have resulted because of anti-gay sentiment. True, people shouldn't have to pick a particular day to commemorate the issue, but I think the general population needs the reminder. I think this day isn't important so much for the people actually wearing the purple, rather it is important to those not wearing purple because: (1)the naysayers need to know gay supports exist in numbers; and (2) those sitting on the fence are reminded of what's at stake and that they're not alone ( ... )

I really hope that I wake up later today and am pleasantly surprised by the impact. Or on the 21st. I HOPE that I am proven wrong. But things like this have happened before for various reasons and then they're done. Maybe I'm a cynic. But even if this issue is brought to light...They will still be forgetting the rest of the community. These six boys should not be forgotten. But neither should the other people that have died. And those other people already have been. And that is not fair.

Perhaps I am an idealist. The whole thing has been pretty viral on facebook and I've run into quite a few discussions regarding the movement. So perhaps not the greatest impact, but I'm happy to see it doing something.

I agree. I don't see how something as simple as wearing a certain color on a certain day is going to change anything. For one, unless you're running around shouting "I'M WEARING THIS SHIRT TO..." most people aren't even going to realize you're doing anything. Two, the people who do realize what you're doing are generally either already sympathetic to the cause, or will give you a "oh, that's nice," and go about their day.

Exactly. People have mistaken my views for not being understanding of the cause and I am like that is SO far from the truth. It's the way they've gone about it. I didn't really think about it until just now but why not at least tell people to paint something on the shirts? But a plain color is easy to miss. Most people are going to be like "wow there's a strange abundance of purple" and move on with their lives...if they even do that much.
