Rachel was shaking. She couldn’t wrap her mind around anything solid. There were just a bunch of little thoughts fluttering through her mind. Most of them were snapshots of the life she could have had. A tiny Rachel staring into the mirror as her mom brushed her hair. Her mom cradling her when the boy she had a crush on in elementary school said her nose was too big and made her cry. Her mom beaming as she won each and every singing competition. Except this one. And now, worst of all, to add insult to injury, her mom had a new baby. One that would actually win everything. One that would be trained from the start to sing well. One that would be beautiful and popular and everyone would like. Her nose wouldn’t be too big.

Rachel sank down on the steps, tears streaming down her cheeks. She felt a hand rest on her shoulder and she jumped, turning quickly, not even bothering to stop the tears. Quinn sat down wordlessly beside her. Her arms encircled the brunette and she cradled her softly.

Quinn would never tell Rachel that she felt partly responsible for her pain. She had been the one to give up the baby after all. And she would definitely definitely never tell Rachel that the one thing she feared more than anything else was ending up like Shelby and not having anybody to give her a Beth.
