The time Zeus ate 29 hair ties and lived to tell about it

My dear cat Zeus recently found himself in quite the pickle. I have seen him time after time playing with my hair bands. I have a habit of taking out my pony tail and setting the band wherever I am...on the nightstand, table, whatever. He loves them. He's constantly playing with them. One day I noticed it disappeared. Could he have EATEN it? No way ( Read more... )

I think I just saw my cat eat a hair-band. I went online to google it, and came across your story. Did your cat eat them all in one session...or had it been eating them over time?

And also, did you feel as though your cat was gaining weight prior to the surgery? I have this fear that my cat has been eating my hairbands this whole time (and bc of it putting on weight), while I thought she was just batting them under the fridge or losing them!

I can't imagine he had access to them all in one session. I'd literally seen him eat one at a time on a few separate occasions. I had no idea that he had eaten THAT many, or that they weren't passing. I totally figured they were passing.

I didn't notice a weight gain; if anything he lost a little weight. He went from 18 lbs. to 17 lbs. In time, his food finally wouldn't pass through the haley's comet of hair ties so that's when he had symptoms that something was wrong. However, since half of his stomach was literally filled, I have a feeling he wasn't able to eat enough to maintain his weight.

OMG this happened to my cat! I cant believe how many they eat, and like you, I would leave them on my bedside table etc and they would slowly disappear :( However I just assumed I had lost them, as hair ties and bobby pins always go missing...

My vet felt this lump in my cat's stomach and they thought it was cancer. I was devastated and gave the go-ahead to cut him open and instead they found 20 hair ties!! Because I have thick hair I use the thicker elastic ones and apparently it was all in this big tight ball of elastic :(

Will have to hide them from now on. I bought some new ones which are made with a stretchy fabric instead of elastic and are quite big, so hopefully he wont eat those!

My cat is in the hospital right now, he had surgery yesterday, they had taken at LEAST 50 hair ties, ribbons, rubberbands and numerous items out of his stomach and intestines, he isn't doing very well at the time and I know this is costing us major $$$ also. He has been running a fever of 104 all night they said, but he thinks he will get to come home this afternoon, so my fingers are crossed and praying hard here..hope Jasper lives to tell about his hair tie fun also. We have ALSO put all hair ties, rubber bands, ribbons every thing up.

Zeus stop eating those things.

My cat Rock loved playing with hair ties. I had no idea he was eating them. he had lost some weight before we brought him to vet. One day he stated throwing up large amounts. we brought him to the vet the next day. took blood test an all. did not get x-ray $$$. they sent us home with anti vomit meds. he was ok for the day, did not throw up till that night. we brought him to vet the next day got x-rays. Vet said he might have something in his stomach, not sure, she said she would give him barium an fluids over night.the next day he was dead! The vet did autopsy on Rock that's when she found 22 hair ties in his stomach. I thought he was just playing with the hair, never saw him eat one. So sad to lose a pet. Rock was only 2 years old.

My male fur baby, Reagan, had a UTI and crystals this past November. He had surgery so the vet could determine the type of stones. He was 14 months old. This week he had the same symptons and is now 16 months old. His urine tested positive for crystals and UTI Friday. Saturday we scheduled an xray to see if the crystals had formed stones yet. The vet called to tell me he would need to consult with radiologist on the stones but didn't appear to be any. However, what he could confirm is that he had hair ties in his stomach! They are not affecting now and surgery is scheduled Monday. I just monitor for GI issues. He did receive confirmation later Sat that he does not have stones. At least something positive for my kitty the last few days ( ... )
