Have been watching Goro deluxe recently. Interesting show, just 20 minutes but learning so much. It recommends interesting books of different subjects.
Today's review is 篠田达明, a doctor who looks at historical figures from medical perspective. Many of his books are nominated for the Japan's literacy prices. For history fans out there, this may be interesting for you.
In this episode, 篠田-san introduce his new book that talks about the height and weight of japanese historical figures.
He calculate based on the person's length of sleeve.
Yukichi Fukuzawa, a Meiji era philosopher and the founder of Keio University. One of the Tokugawa descendent
篠田-san said this Tokugawa descendent has brain numbness because of his stiff shoulders and pouting of the mouth.
Later in the show, they displayed a real life picture of the Tokugawa's descendent's skeletal remains, which indicates the presence of brain numbness.
And the life-sized figures of the famous japanese historical figures.
Saigō Takamori, one of the influential samurai has some problem with his "eggs" which swells as big as AD yamada's head.
Sensei estimated that Toyotomi Hideyoshi is shorter that his official potrait. He said that there was this western vistor who wrote that Toyotomi is only 5 inch (short as midget). Sensei thought it is not possible so he estimated Toyotomi's height to be the shortest of the normal people's height. 140m. As a influential figure, Toyotomi probably requested his painter to paint him taller.
Later they also talked about Tokugawa Ieyasu 's height. His height is quite certain because his alter tablet's height is the same as his height.
Next segment: The interpretation of oil paintings. Both paintings contains nudity so press on the links if you are old enough to view the nudity scenes.
Goro pointed out that Venus's facial expression looked gloomy and Sensei said Goro is really sharp in his observation.
He pointed out that the outward curve of the big toe can easily cause scorns(?) which can be painful. Therefore the Venus (model) have a gloomy expression. Next is the painting Bathsheba at her bath. Sensei said the shadows on the model's left breast is caused by breast cancer. It could really be cancer afterall because the model died very young.
Eh~ the information of the alter tablet indicates the historical figure's height is interesting ne~ Art and history lessons can be interesting if it is viewed in medical perspective. Imagine the gossips.
