Yep, that's intentional. Last round we had over 50 artists signed up, and only about half of those showed up to claim fic, and the others were never heard from again. We decided at that time that, since there's such a long time between the opening of sign-ups and claiming, we'd have a check-in post prior to claiming so we can be sure of the number of artists that were still planning to participate.
I could possibly sign up, but I'd like to wait for when more info about the fics are up, since I know only two fandoms on the fic list (!) also I'm quite picky about characters and pairings (sorry). Please, let me know if it's ok. :)
That's fine, though I can't guarantee that you'll get your first choice as it's first come. (Though we do request that authors assist their artists when the artist is unfamiliar with the fandom. Given that we're a multi-fandom, small fandom challenge, we expect that most artists won't be familiar with every fandom.)
Also, you'll need to join this community even before you sign up in order to see the 'sneak preview' post when I put it up, as it will be locked to the comm.
It is not too late to sign up. The artists sign-ups do officially close on the 31st, but we tend to be short artists so I leave sign-ups open until all the fic have been claimed.
If you're asking for yourself, though, you've already signed up as an artist. (Though you did miss the check in.) So if you want to claim a fic, you're good to go.
