RETURN

Her Mark - II viper - conspicuously unmarked, unblemished - finally came to a standstill. As the whine of the engines died down, from the cockpit, Kara could already see a large crowd beginning to gather on the hanger deck. Mostly deckhands thus far, some pilots, but she guessed the grunts would be minutes away at the most. Kara depressurised, then released the canopy before slowly unfastening the collar of her flight suit, using the comfort of this familiar ritual to wind down, to prepare. She closed her eyes momentarily, took a deep breath and exhaled loudly through pursed lips. Let the show begin. Today’s headlining act: Kara Thrace and her special destiny.

She lifted herself up and out of the cockpit and started warily down the ladder, head high. No one approached to assist her, take her helmet. The scattered crowd stood back, all eyes upon her - suspicious, hostile - and other than the background ticks, creaks and groans of cooling metal, their silence absolute. Kara remained standing by her viper, straightened her shoulders, and felt the burn of fight and flight rush through her. *Right*. Had she really expected anything more? What would her reaction have been in their place?

Where the frack was Lee? She scanned the deck, automatically sifting through the chaos of post battle landings, for his Mark -VII. They had been the last vipers to make their combat landings before the jump. Kara felt her body stiffen with sudden anxiety. Lee. How would he react? Had he believed her? Would it even matter? It had been hard to judge by his expression out there. Stunned? Yes. Convinced? Well…time would tell. But if there was ever a time that she needed him to have her back, to have faith..…..she shifted her gaze suddenly, alerted to new sounds of commotion across the hanger deck, to see Lee literally launch himself out of his cockpit. His collar wrenched off with impatient hands, his helmet clattered unheeded to the deck, as he shoved away the chief who was trying to assist him. Lee’s feet barely grazed the ladder placed to aid his descent, staggering, skidding, sliding a little, in his haste, in his struggle to gain purchase on the deck, showing none of his usual grace and purpose of movement, such was his seeming urgency.

Kara stood perfectly still. She could see the exact moment that his eyes found her and waited as he ran toward her, pushing unseeingly through the growing crowd of onlookers. Lee’s gaze remained fixed on hers, until suddenly he was but inches away, so close that she could see the blue eyes, darkened and wide with adrenaline, the beads of moisture on his too pale face, his hair spiky with sweat, his chest heaving. Lee said nothing as he finally halted in front of her , just pulled her into a bone crushing embrace, the force of his momentum sweeping her up and off her feet. Kara closed her eyes and let out a breath she had been unaware of holding, her initial stiffness, giving way to a yielding softness, fighting off both sudden and unexpected tears, and the unbidden tangle of fears, and insecurities that always threatened to drown her when close to Lee, as she returned his embrace, melding her curves against the hard planes of his body.

Kara felt the tight coils of anxiety in her gut melting away. For a moment, surrounded as she was by the reality of the strength, and warmth of Lee’s arms, his smell, Kara could almost forget where they were, who she was, what she had to do. Just for a moment. The hanger faded into blackness around them as Kara allowed herself the luxury of this moment , to be held safe in the arms of this man that she had loved above all others for longer than she could admit, even to herself.

Lee eventually pulled back, simply staring at her for what seemed like an eternity, before finally raising shaking hands, and cupping her face, as he croaked:
“Kara?”
She nodded . Her eyes flickered over his face, a tremulous smile on her lips,
“It’s really me Lee”.
Kara scanned Lee’s face, features as familiar to her as her own, searching for any sign of hesitancy, of doubt, before adding:
“It’s really me, I’m not a Cylon Lee”.
She bit her lip hard , looking up at him, then soothed the area with a sweep of her tongue, waiting nervously for his response. Lee tracked these characteristic movements, his gaze flickering from her lips to her eyes and back again, his own eyes now dark and flooded with unshed tears, before, like a man coming out of a trance, he gathered her up closer to him again, whispering roughly,
“I don’t frakkin’ care Kara.”
He shuddered against her,
“If you’re really back, I just don’t frakkin’ care”.

All Lee had had to do was pull her into his arms. They could handle whatever came next. They were motherfrakkin’ Starbuck and Apollo! She grinned widely in sudden exhilaration. In the background now, she could hear the clatter of boots running toward them, weapons being cocked. The brass would be next. Kara tensed automatically, pulled back, preparing herself to be shackled. Lee, seemingly oblivious however, had other ideas. He caught her left hand in his, pulled her flush against him, kissed her hard and without apology before he pivoting suddenly, and dragging her slightly behind him, side arm drawn. He’d picked a side. The marines surrounding them hesitated, momentarily intimidated by the full force of Apollonian attitude, as Lee growled:
“No one touches her”.
He gestured with his side arm, and moved forward, keeping Kara behind him.
“Make a hole”.
