Art and children just don't mix.

the current exhibit at the gallery includes 2 movies that play on loop, one at a time. one story is a documentary about people finding an airplane propeller while the other is a movie about adam and eve (completely nude people wandering around in the forest). it is my duty to switch out the movies. when nobody comes in during a movie rotation, i ( Read more... )

so what exactly is wrong with children seeing nudity in an art gallery?

[granted, there are things in certain galleries that children should not see -- violence, explicit sexuality, drug use, etc. but simple nudity?]

i don't know. i feel like children have a certain innocence that needs to be preserved. i think that is the reasoning behind movie ratings: there is no nudity in pg movies and under.

yes -- however, nudity in movies, especially that which is found in R movies, is almost always sexual in nature.
i think it's kind of ironic to shield "innocent" children from seeing an art film [which probably has nudity comparable to traditional nude painting and sculpture] about, in its simplest form, innocence.
furthermore, i think that there is a difference between innocence and ignorance; innocence is more about experience, and ignorance is more about knowledge.

i see your point very clearly. i guess that does not negate the fact that i feel uncomfortable with children seeing the film. not everyone has the same views and i am okay with that.

I agree, the irony of the timing of the arrival of children with the showing of this particular movie is interesting (which is, I believe, the point of your post). Fact is, many in our society today do have difficulty with children being "exposed" to nudity. Whether that is "right" or "wrong" is a whole other topic for debate which I, personally, do not wish to enter into on LJ....it is way to individual....

but I do think the irony of your situation at work is, indeed, kind of funny in a way, and it sounds like you have done a good job of handling a potentially awkward situation.

I agree.

However, I do not agree with the title of this post "Art & Children Just Don't Mix." I think that all of the arts (visual, musical, etc.) are things that children need to be exposed to as early as possible in their life. I was glad once I read on that this is not what you meant :)

the title is a little misleading, isn't it?
