That's a good question. I know I was so burned out on extracurriculars that I barely joined German Club and American Chemical Society for my two majors. In high school, the conservation club had been my life, but not once in four years of college did I go anywhere near environmental issues.
The NY Times did an article about this; I don't feel like looking it up. Academically, I think girls continue to do better than boys -- they get higher grades.
I also didn't participate as much in extracurriculars in college as in HS -- my main time constraint was having to work.
According to a college book we have at home, for the class that started at Lawrence in 2004, 1,738 applied and 69 percent were accepted. That means that in just two years, the acceptance rate dropped 13 points -- pretty impressive! It seems pretty consistent that 30% enroll.
