In our high school we ordered rings at the very beginning of junior year.

In some ways it's odd to get rings sophomore year -- if you're getting it personalized with activities or stuff that might change. BUT it does guarantee that they'll wear the ring for two years. If you get your high school ring your senior year, how long do you really wear it?

Here at VT there's a whole elaborate tradition about class rings; "Ring Premiere" was in October, and it's juniors who order their rings. "Ring Dance" will be in February; that's when the rings are worn for the first time.

My memory is a bit fuzzy, because I didn't actually order a HS ring, but I'm thinking it was either late in the junior year, or early senior year. In fact, now that I think about it more, I seem to recall the company who did that for our school took orders for rings and graduation announcements all at the same time.

But yeah, I think sophomore seems to early.

My high school didn't really do rings - I think a couple of people bought something, but I also think those people weren't going to college either.

At MIT the ring committee is picked at the end of freshman year, and they work on the design through the first semester sophomore year. The ring premeire is in late winter/early spring, and that's when purchasing starts and the rings are delivered and picked up (usually at a big party or some such event) at the end of sophomore year. Truly - you're half way through at least by that point, and around here I guess that means you're pretty much assured to make it.

That does seem a bit early. At our high school, we didn't get rings until our senior year.

I don't remember when we got our high school rings. I never planned on getting one.

At MIT you get your Rat at the end of sophomore year, but you wear the ring reversed until you graduate-- that signifies that you're still a student.
