It's wonderful that you were able to ask so many questions - even your descriptions of the tour guide's answers has given me a perspective on the sport/art that I never understood. But I agree - why do they need to kill the bull?
I agree - there seems to be this very interesting side with all the majesty, artistry, pomp and circumstance as well as skill. But I don't understand the killing at the end either. I wonder if there is anything in the history of the sport that would provide a clue... as in, how did bullfighting get started? Is there anything in the roots/history that has to do with hunting or self-preservation (man vs. animal, so to speak), where maybe that part of the process got lost over time? It just seems rather strange to me. The whole needless slaughter thing doesn't catalog for me either. *shrug*
