Well, I'm not European myself, but from my time there, I would surmise that part of it is the widespread acceptability of topless (and some places, bottomless) beaches and pools. If you're not afraid to go topless at the local community swimming pool, what's the difference in having a suit that stuff hangs out of? At that point, you're probably actually looking better topless. That's also the reason for two piece suits -- a one piece suit pulled down to the waist just doesn't look right when you're trying to let the breasts out

The maple sugar season is late this year (as the main story in our Sunday paper said). You need daytime temps in the 40s and night temps below freezing. We've been averaging in the 20s and 30s during the day lately.
Good point, though, about the topless bathing in Europe resulting in the need for two piece suits. There were a few topless bathers at this place.
Re: teenagers whose body types don't fit the fashions they're wearing-- I think for these girls, it's more important to wear what's "trendy" than to dress appropriately. I honestly don't think they realize how awful they look.
Yeah - it grealy saddens me to see youth in clothes that are far beyond inappropriate for their weight, and for whatever they are doing, like going to school!?!?!
As far as bathing suits go - I don't know about the whole body image, etc. thing. I know for me - my waist is small (about the only thing I've got going!) so I tend towards 2-piece/bikinis just because 1 pieces tend to pull away from my waist making me bigger overall...as long as I have a cover up for my butt/thighs, I'm a happy camper! But I do tend to feel better when I look around at what other women are wearing and no that if I had rejected that suit, they really should have too! It's nice feeling good by comparison, so why argue sometimes?!?!
The thing is, I can't figure out whether to be saddened by these girls who dress inappropriately, or applaud them for wearing what they want to in spite of their body shape. A friend of mine has a daughter who dresses inappopriately, and she is afraid to say anything to her daughter because she doesn't want to convey the message that there is something wrong with her body.
And hey -- if you look good in two-piece/bikinis, go for it!
