We settled in and unpacked our stuff and then went for a stroll around in a big square around the hotel area. We saw the the Pantheon   and walked the what seemed miles around The University of Paris. We are real close to ( Read more... )

Where are you staying there? If you are in the Latin Quarter area, you are in my old stomping grounds from last summer.

If you are by the Pantheon you are a hop, skip and a jump from the Cluny, Lutece, Rue Mouffetard, library St. Genevieve, Genevieve Church, Jardin du Luxembourg, Luxembourg Palace/Museum, Notre Dame, the Shakespeare and Co. bookstore, Grande Mosquee de Paris and its hammam.

BTW, if you are looking for good fabric stores, check out Montmartre neighborhood, near the base of the hill for Sacre Couer.

Your hotel is right behind the Pantheon, so all of the locations I described are definitely nearby. The Cluny should only be a few blocks away, as well as Notre Dame and Shakespeare. The first two are musts. If you get the chance, there is a Belgian bar in the square in front of the Sorbonne call "Le Gueuze", tasty food, especially the mussels. A couple of doors down from there is a cute small chain ethnic import textile and jewelry shop.

Also check out some of the bakeries,(pain de chocolat and coffee for breakfast) and the fast food creperies. There should be one around the corner from the front entrance of the Jardin du Luxembourg (I think catty-corner from the Sorbonne square)where the manager/owner speaks excellent English. They do both savory and sweet.

Otherwise, try to fit in the Louvre (it should have extended hours Wednesday night) and Musee D'Orsay.

Oh yeah, Le Gueuze is a beer bar (unusual in France) that's awesome, and try the frites as well, I believe they come with the mussels. Bright green paintjob, can't miss. I'd also suggest a wonderful Ethiopian place, but it's in an entirely different section of the city, and they have wacky hours.
