Title: I Hate To Say I Told You So
Fandom: Grey's Anatomy
Characters/Pairings: Alex, Ava(Rebecca), Izzie, Meredith. Implied Alex/Ava, Alex/Izzie.
Word Count: 624
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: Up to 4.13 - Piece Of My Heart, then theorizing from there on out.
Author's Note: There is valid reasoning in this, believe it or not. It may not be what I think will happen but it is quite interesting (to me).
Summary: Izzie won't meet his eyes. Not in the morning, over coffee, or in the hallway during rounds.
He will do this, he decides. He puts a hand to her stomach and knows right there and then that this is what he has to do. He will take responsibility, he will not leave, because that’s something his father would do and he will never be like him. He made himself a promise that if he ever got in this situation he wouldn’t take the easy road.
He’s in that situation now.
No way out.
---
Izzie won’t meet his eyes. Not in the morning, over coffee, or in the hallway during rounds. Not when she talks to him, not when she bumps into him.
They were supposed to be past this.
“What’s wrong with you?”
She shakes her head.
---
“Why do I have another houseguest, Alex?”
It takes her a few days to notice. Ava tells him she doesn’t want to go home, back to her husband, and she’s still his blind spot, she still gets to him even if he wants to resist.
“It’s complicated.” It’s easier than telling her why.
---
He wakes up to arguing in the hallway and he opens the door to find them - Izzie and Ava (he still calls her Ava, at least in his head, he still doesn’t know any better).
Their words drop with their eyes.
---
Later:
“Just go back to sleep.”
She curls into him, and it’s too much, she is too much, and her scent and her hair on his skin and her breath on him are all too much.
He can’t fall asleep until she’s rolled onto her other side, back to him, and he thinks there must be something wrong if he can’t breathe and he can’t sleep with her here.
---
“Why were you two in the hallway last night?”
He feels like she’s the only one he can ask, and there’s something wrong with that too.
Izzie looks at him for the first time in days. “This isn’t my business.”
He catches her arm when she tries to walk past him, fingers circling her wrist, and she doesn’t pull away and he thinks part of her must want to tell him if she’s just standing here but he can’t tell her that it all be okay, that this will be fine, because it probably won’t. It won’t, and he’s used up all his words for that on someone else, and there was a time that he saved those words for her and her only.
It takes her a moment before she says, voice low enough that he has to strain his ears to hear her, “Did you ever ask for proof?”
As her footsteps beat against the tile he gets it.
---
Her labs don’t lie.
He thinks he might be sick.
---
“Why did you lie?”
Caught, and now it’s her that won’t look at him. She mumbles things like ‘i just wanted you’ and talks of plans and how they can still make this work, and it’s all falling on deaf ears now.
“I’m sorry,” she says, like that makes it all better.
---
She’s gone the next day. Game over.
He changes his sheets and pretends none of this ever happened.
---
“Are you okay?”
It’s her turn now.
“No.” Truth, for once, because he’s tired of the lies, tired of the games, and he got used to the idea, he did it for her, he was going to do it for her, except there was never anything to get used to and that hurts more than it should.
Izzie’s eyes tell him she’s starting to understand why he’s always been so closed off, while her touch takes over that mantra.
It’ll all be okay, it’ll all be okay, it’ll all be okay.
