Saaaad!! Beautifully heart-wrenching. I imagine Claire's going to be pretty upset with Jack when she gets to his place. I think Sawyer is capable of being self-sacrificing when he really cares... it just takes a lot. You write him well and it's an enjoyable read.

If I ever write a sequel to this (and that's pretty unlikely, being that I'm about two paragraphs away from finishing the prequel) Claire is so going to chew Jack out when she finds out that he was the catalyst for this whole thing.

Sawyer, complex as he is, could be self-sacrificing, I agree. Definitly now, as he's come such a long way. I'm glad you think I write him well -- I'm all about good characterization.
