You need the experience of thousands of encounters with thousands of races to have a general idea of what can and can't be done and how. Thats why no matter how good the Doctor's companions are, they always tend to play second fiddle to him. It's commonly accepted that humans only have 5 senses.  Taste, touch, hearing, smell, and sight.  If there was a 6th sense, people would say that it would be some sort of paranormal sense, a catch-all for spirit seeing, empathy, telepathy, and instinctive bad feelings.

I do not believe this to be true.
