I thought that campus shootings had truly ended in the 90s, that we've heard the last of them and Virginia Tech was simply an aberration. But 7 people have now died in Northern Illinois University, just ten months since Virginia, apparently, and it's just. Short of doing bag checks at every entrance of a campus to ensure our own safety, this is ( Read more... )

I think part of it is the culture of violence that seeps into all forms of media and pervades daily life. I shan't talk about something I'm not too familiar with, but I'm inclined to believe the problem isn't inherent in whether or not people are allowed to have guns, though. Whether it's legal or not, if someone wanted something they would find a way to get it--don't most countries have drug laws, for instance? But if their society shapes them so that they're less attracted to the idea, then whether or not it's allowed they just won't.

i do see where you're coming from but i do think it's interesting to note the differences in shooting and gun crime of america to other countries.

Do you mean the correlation of gun laws to gun crimes/shootings, or just in general?

What scares me the most is that my classes are so, so small. We only have about 10 people in each class. So if a gun-person ever came in, there's nowhere to hide. I guess Australia has less guns than the US, but a freak shooting is still a freak shooting.

That's true; it really could happen anywhere, and there's no way to stop it if it ever does. I remember reading about a shooting at a preschool in some European country (I don't remember which) many years ago, and there had never been a tragedy of its kind before and everyone had been so shocked about it.

Then there was that shooting in the Amish country somewhere too the other year. Of all the places to have a shooting I think the Amish would have really least expected it.

One of the people that died, he was on our swim team so lots of people knew him...It was a scary time since a lot of people had siblings that went there so people were freaking out. But yeah, welcome to America? o.o
