I do not know this for a fact, but I'm guessing part of why it's where it is was the building it's in was the original Christian Science Publishing building.
The Monitor was published there, and it might have been partly a desire to remind workers and guest of the worldwide focus of said paper.
Or just some crazy as Christian Scientist's pet project.
It was built more to be something to draw people to the library about Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Science. "Hey, we have this really cool thing, then we can force you to learn about christian science and about HOW AWESOME IT IS to not take medicines.
It is pretty fucking awesome though... the mapparium, not the lack of medicine.
My favorite thing about Boston, and the thing that kept me here when I wanted to move away 3 months after I moved here was the skyline from the Charles River it was the most breathtaking skyline I'd ever seen. And is still, to me the most beautiful and well proportioned skyline in the world.
Late afternoon sun / sunset against the Back Bay skyline from the Redline is, indeed, one of the best, most magical things about Boston.
I don't know if you know about the "high spine" plan for the back bay.... would have spread skyscrapers from the common to kenmore... and kind of ruined Boston, in my opinion.
Funny, I was just in NYC and looking around and thinking "beause of the sheer number of them, you don't notice how fucking UGLY many of these buildings are."
I did know about the spine. I like the way it is, with just the few buildings sticking up. I wouldn't mind a few more clustered around the bases of the pru and the hancock.
I think downtown could use some more though. I think the fact that there is a bunch there covers the hideousness of some of them. The 80 was not a good period of skyscraper design.

BTW - My family plot in Mt Auburn overlooks MBE's bigass grave / roman columned thing.
