IME (former officer for ABATE of Va., former Union rep, etc.), actual petitions -- i.e., lists of signatures -- are of very little influence on legislators. Far better to write to your congresspersons: preferably snail mail, but email or phone calls are also logged and the info passed on to them. An online form is okay, but it's good to follow up with a more personal contact.
