Okay so I'm going on a drumming field trip on Saturday. It's a bonfire night in Rye, which is south of us. We all have to get duded up in piratical gear, but not the cheap fancy dress kind. Also, the colours for the band are black and red. Stage set

If I were doing it, I'd probably make the bows out of a narrower grosgrain ribbon, so they'd be smaller but still have a lot of definition.

Suggestions: use metallic thread to do the whipstitching on the edges, or you could use braided metallic thread to go on the outside under the whipstitched border. You could make frilly ruffles out of very tiny lace ribbon and use it behind the folded up bits.
