Heading in to the room, Rachel noticed that most of the group had yet to arrive. Steering away from Mike, Matt, and Noah, black Mary Jane’s made their way across tiled floors. Rachel settled into a maroon plastic chair next to Brittany.
“Hello Brittany, how are you today? Where’s your more abrasive counterpart?” Rachel stated, smiling over at Brittany.
Before replying, Brittany bent a page before closing the book she was reading. “Hey Rachel, I’m good, but Santana’s not here today, she said she wasn’t feeling well,” Brittany replied, as a slight frown marred her face. “I think she got sick from the dinner I cooked her last night. She didn’t say it, but I think she just didn’t want to hurt my feelings.”
“Well I hope she gets better soon. It’s unfortunate that she’s sick when we’re so close to Nationals, but I’m sure she’ll be up and running in no time… So,” Rachel said, filling in the silence, “you’re reading The Fountainhead? Are you an Objectivist?” the brunette continued, hiding the surprise she certainly felt.
“Huh? Objectivist? Is that like people who hold signs and fight for animals? If it is, I’m not one right now, but I totally agree. Yeah, totally” Brittany responded, nodding swiftly in agreement.
“No, I believe you’re talking about activists, an Objectivists is someone who follows and believes in the teachings and philosiphies of Ayn Rand, ” Rachel explained. Taking a slight breath, the girl was about to go into further explanations about Rand but Brittany cut her off.
“Oh, well no, not really. Why would I be an Objectivist?” the blonde asked, utterly confused why Rachel would think that.
“Well, you’re reading The Fountainhead, which Rand wrote. Much of her fiction novels helped shape the philosophy of Objectivism. So I figured that if you were a Rand fan, you might be an Objectivist as well. I’m not an Objectivist, but I do believe it is important to understand the different philosophies out there. Though I am pleasantly surprised that you’re reading Rand. Not that I’m much of a believer in her philosophy, but that you’re willingness to further your life by reading is encouraging,” the songstress replied with an excited smile.
“Oh… Okay… I just wanted to read the book because it was mentioned in another book. But this one’s kinda weird, and it’s confusing sometime. I kinda like it though, but it takes place, like, a long time ago so I guess the way people were, were very different, which is totally funny, because even then, people seem to still be the same as they are now,” the cheerleader responded making a slight face of disgust.
Though slightly jumbled, Rachel was impressed with the insightful answer from the blonde. “What book was it, that got you to read The Fountainhead? Did you read any of the other books mentioned as well?” Rachel asked, curious to find out what book would push the blonde to pick up such a tomb of a book.
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower! It’s my favorite book ever! Santana and I read it all the time, and she got me all the books that are in it. And I’m reading it in the same order Charlie read it. Usually San and I read them together and she’ll explain it if I get really confused, but since it’s boring without San, I decided to read ahead,” Brittany said, happy to talk about her two favorite things.
“Won’t Santana be lost once you guys start reading together again? Rachel asked, completely enraptured by the conversation at hand.
“Oh, no, I don’t think so. San’s read all the books already. She was the one who gave me Perks. And well, this one’s not too hard to read it’s just long. If I don’t know anything I’ll just ask her later anyways.”
“Is that Santana’s favorite book or something?” Rachel asked as she lifted her head, noticing that they were only waiting for Mr. Schuester, Quinn, Artie, and Tina to come.
"Definitely! She never brought it up, but she always has a copy of the book in her duffel bag. So one time I asked her why she always had it, she said that it was her favorite book. The next day she gave me a copy, so I read it. I liked it so much, I told her I wanted to read all the books Charlie read, so on my birthday, she got me all the books!” Brittany excitedly told her.
“Wow, that’s sweet of her.”
“Yeah, and like, I was over at her place and we were just hanging out, and she looked over at me and she said that I was her Sam, I knew that she liked me the way I liked her. We started dating after that,” Brittany dreamily stated.
“Who’s Sam?” Rachel asked, wondering is this Sam guy was anything like the ditzy blonde next to her.
“Sam is the girl Charlie falls in love with, Santana’s not really like Charlie though…” Brittany finished on a softer note.
“Oh,” Rachel let out, not sure how to really respond to everything that’s just been said.
“Want to know a secret?” Brittany asked, easily changing subjects.
“Sure,” Rachel replied simply.
“Wait, before I tell you, this really is a secret you know, I mean, you can’t go around telling everybody, like when you spilled about Quinn pregnancy. I know you only told because you like Finn or Quinn or something, but still, if I tell you, you cannot tell anyone. I mean, I haven’t even told this to Santana yet, and if she finds out that not only did I tell you before her but if she hears it from someone else, she really will beat you up,” Brittany speaks, starring blankly at Rachel.
“While my past actions lead you to believe that I am not only untrustworthy, but as well selfish, I assure you that I will not mention this to anyone,” Rachel answered, not completely sure how to respond to the girl.
“I’m totally in love with Santana,” Brittany said as she leaned in close, turning her head and looking around, making sure no one would overhear her. “We haven’t told each other or anything, but I’m sure she loves me. See, she’s really actually quiet about herself. While she likes being popular and everything, I don’t think anyone at this school really knows her, well, everyone but me. I think she’s scared and that she wants to be sure. I think that’s why I haven’t said it either. I’ve wanted to be sure, you know? And now I’m pretty sure I’m sure.”
“Wow… well, wow, I’m really happy for you Britt.” Rachel responded, squeezing Brittany’s hand. “That’s wonderful. I’m shocked you guys haven’t said anything yet. You’re both so affectionate with each other, that I don’t think anyone would have questioned your love for each other. So, when are you going to tell her?”
“I don’t know, but soon I think…” the blonde softly said.
Both girls stopped speaking the moment they heard Mr. Schuester call for everyone’s attention. Shaking her head, Rachel moved her thoughts away from everything she just learned and focused on Mr. Schuester.
Once glee ended, both girls started heading towards the parking lot together. “You know Rachel, I think I’m gonna go check on San and maybe even tell her,” Brittany said softly, a serene smile settled on her lips.
“I think that would be a wise decision. I’m sure Santana will be delighted to hear about it.”
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Thanks Rach!” Brittany said as she got into her car. Nodding along, Rachel watched the girl buckle up, turned on her ignition, and quickly head out the parking lot.
She heard a soft knock, then quickly felt a rush of cool air that made her slightly shiver. Moments later her bed dipped and she felt a warm body nuzzle up to her, as arms snaked about her. Letting out a lazy smile, the she let out a mumbled ‘hello.’
“I missed you today,” her blonde girlfriend said softly. “But I hope you’re feeling better.”
“I missed you too, and I’m feeling much better now. I’m glad you’re here, my day’s been boring without you” Santana said softly. Grabbing the hand that Brittany rested at the dip of her waist, Santana placed a small kiss on the back of her hand. Turning over, the Latina blinked her eyes several times before they adjusted to the room and her girlfriend. Leaning in close, Santana kissed her girlfriend sweetly. Pulling back softly, Santana lowered her head to the pillow, and contentedly watched her girlfriend through lidded eyes.
Brittany’s’ index finger mindlessly drew patterns against soft skin. She closed her eyes for a moment, took in a deep breath, released it, and then looked over at her girlfriend. She could totally do this. “Hey babe?” the blonde questioned lightly.
“Yes?” Santana simply replied, slightly amused and confused by the intensity that seemed to be emitting from her girlfriend.
“You’re… you’re my Sam too,” Brittany began, reminding Santana of what she had said before they started dating. Liking how they felt coming out of her mouth, Brittany seemed to have gained some unseen confidence form the words that began pouring out. “I know we’re not Charlie, because hello, Charlie’s way too awkward and stuff, but you know, everything Charlie feels for Sam? That’s totally how I feel for you… I love you. I think I might have always loved you, but I don’t think I said anything because first, I didn’t think to think about it, you know? And then we were best friends, and I thought maybe that’s what best friend love was like, ad then there was all that mess right before we started dating. Anyways, I think I’ve always known, it’s just now I’m sure sure. You know,” the blonde questioned before looking at Santana eagerly.
Blinking a few times, a slow smile formed once Santana realized that everything Brittany had just said was a declaration of love. Suddenly Santana was towering over Brittany, her black hair cascading around Brittany’s face, her slender arms settled next to tantalizing shoulders, and her legs rubbing against the curve of hips. She watched as Brittany slightly shuddered at all the contact. Dipping her head down, she kissed the blonde. Pulling back, she watched the sparkle of Brittany’s piercing blue eyes as they opened.
“I love you too. I’m… I’m glad you’re sure. I would have said something sooner, but I just, I didn’t want to rush things and maybe scare you away… But yeah, I love you Britt,” Santana finished as she settled next to the blonde and wrapped her arms around her.
“I feel infinite,” the blonde mumbled later on in the night, before slowly drifting to sleep. Santana pulled in a little closer and placed a soft kiss on the girls’ collarbone. “Love you,” she whispered before allowing herself to sleep.
