Hey, honey! I've never used the "insert link" function of LJ, but I use the code and it never changes, so creating links is easy if you know the code!
If you want to insert a link with text, you can use this code:
You just put the http address of the link between the parentheses, and the text between the >< symbols. For example, to create a link to your journal profile with the words "Click here!", you use:
Alright- so i tried it- and it didn't work :S i put in the code and all that, the http address between the "", the "here" between the ><- and it just sort of sat there all bulky and not linky like :C am i supposed to take out any spaces or hit enter or some special place to put it?
I don't think you need to do anything special; as long as it looks like my examples, it should work...
I'm trying to figure out what's different between yours and mine. When you go to make a post, there are two tabs on the right side of the entry box; one says "Rich text" and the other says "HTML". Which one do you use?
Also, please try using the codes I gave you in a comment here; if it works in the comments but not your journal posts, it could be a formatting problem with the journal. If it doesn't work in the comments, then it's time to contact LJ about the problem.

And the finished link looks like: Click here!
Also, if you want to insert an image, you can use this code:
You just put the http address of the image between the parentheses, so the finished product could be something like:
