Babysitter of the Daleks

So over the past 8 months or so, myself and two others wrote a book! It's a Baby-sitters Club Christmas Super Special crossover with Doctor Who, and it's split into chapters and has illustrations and everything!

Split into manageable chunks (though not by choice, apparently lj doesn't approve of people posting full novel-size entries >.< ), and ( Read more... )

This is fabulous, and everything I could have hoped for from such a crossover :D

Love the jabs at how awkwardly the BSC books deal with all kinds of issues, particularly Jessi's race and Mallory's looks. The idea that the Stoneybrook timeline is so warped because of alien temporal shenanigans makes far too much sense. And Janine being insta-science-pals with the Doctor is wonderful.

(I remember being a kid, reading the books and thinking Janine was annoying because the narrative voice kept saying "She's so annoying." In retrospect, she was totally normal -- and basically me, in terms of things like picking at apostrophe errors, so I'm glad I didn't think too deeply about it at the time because it would have been crushing to know what the BSC really would have thought of me. /cool story bro)

And I am all over the idea of Mallory and Janine getting out of there as Companions. Would definitely pick up that spinoff series.

I agree about Janine! I'm pretty sure I was brainwashed by the narrative into finding her annoying (I guess it helped that Claudia was my favourite, so I was naturally going to be prejudiced against Janine), but now I think she's awesome, and much more like me than any of the BSC. Massive respect to her as well for tutoring Claudia, I tried to help my younger sister with her maths failings a year or so back, but lost patience when she proved to just be unwilling to learn.

I always felt Mallory was hard done by, and got much more stick than she deserved in the series, so we all thought she was the perfect choice for being the new companion. Plus, we know the Doctor has a thing for gingers. :D

I knew I was going to love this story the moment I saw that glorious cover art, and, if anything, it only got better from there. I honestly laughed so hard while I was reading that I think I might have strained something. All the little details of the Super Special format are so lovingly realized, while the worst excesses of characterization are so delightfully skewered. I love how many little details from the BSC books, if you actually try to take them seriously and make sense of them, make more sense when you cross it over with the Whoniverse than otherwise. It is comprehensively awesome ( ... )
