It's time I got back to the good life.

So, I'm back from the writers conference. The whole thing was like a compressed college experience. In the beginning, I arrived unsure of what the program would be like and nervous that I'd be living with strangers. I diligently attended every second of every class, even though it meant that my days started before 9 am and ended around 10 pm. I ( Read more... )

I feel like giving Fauver to seniors sort of misses the point. They build this super-nice dorm, and then reserve it for the only people on campus who might concievably feel like they've grown out of it (given the alternative of actual houses and three previous years of dorm or dorm-like living). As a sophomore or junior, those dorms/apartments would be totally sweet.

Yeah, it would make the most sense if sophomores lived in Lo-Rise/Hi Rise (because it kind of sucks not to have a door), juniors lived in Fauver because they're nicer and everyone gets singles, and seniors lived in houses because they're awesome and can have more than one bathroom for five people. I don't know what senior would pick Fauver over a wood-frame house.

all of those new buildings look weird to me too, even though they've been up for a couple of years now. i drive up vine street and i still see that big curved stone wall and the trees above it, not that giant dorm. heh. did you get a chance to see what they did to high street past the intersection of church (i think) st.? it's curvy, narrow and awful. It's supposed to deter speeders, but i actually think it's more dangerous now.

did you check out the film library in the film studies building? i thought they were putting one in there.

The film studies building wasn't open, so I only got to peek through the windows. I bet if they did have a library, half the books would be written by the head of the program, and you'd have to be a film major if you wanted to touch any of them.

I always have this weird feeling going back to campus, but I don't think it's quite as profound as what you felt. It's more the feeling I got when I was the oldest person going to my pediatric dentist, and I just felt very self-consciously old, too old to be in that place. It's fun driving through and wandering around the campus for nostalgic reasons, but I'd find it odd to take classes there. Although since our reunion's next summer, I'll have plenty of time to get used to being back, I guess.

I think it was only a profound feeling because I was taking classes. I didn't feel that way when we went back for Michelle's graduation or anything. But it was nice being there and taking classes without this, "What do I do when the classes END!" type of worry.

We also got to avoid the self-consciousness of feeling old because there were people there who were, shall we say, much much much much older. I did manage to feel old when we talked to a junior who was working there -- and simultaneously immature because I found it easier to relate to her than any number of "real world" adults. I passed on my five-year reunion this year and I think *that* would've made me feel weirder, hanging out on campus when this whole class that I had no familiarity with at all was graduating.
