I went to my first festival at the weekend, in a garden built by a Victorian atheist to entice people away from church on a Sunday. He ran free coach trips from nearby towns. i also have very sensitive hearing; i have to wear earplugs at nearly every gig i go to.

Ah, bad luck (or good luck - I appreciate it when I'm not at gigs). This festival was a fair heap of folk music - I didn't expect them to be cranking up the mandolins so much.

I do worry about the damage kicking in when my friends are in their late fifties.

i like my hearing skillz! i have considered getting earplugs made specifically for me to wear to gigs... it's just that they're so small i worry about spending more than $3 on them and losing them!

I was very tempted, but I kept ending up next to someone eating it in a tent. Lots of moments of thinking 'I smell rank. Oh, no, that smells delicious...' put me off it.

I had a garlic mushroom crepe. It was excellent.

Yes, it seemed odd enough that he still performs from the base of grinding aaarggh. Not complaining, I like the stuff very much, but is it strange for him? He's a perky adult in a functional relationship and there's a crowd of three hundred people shouting 'Do that one about when the only cheerful thing in your life was imagining all your sucky mates melting like plastic!' 'Do the horrible prolonged break-up!'
