the sky looked amazing tonight, right before the storm hit. i can't even explain or describe it. i've never seen a sky like that before. thankfully, i got home before the rain came

The area where I grew up in Florida technically gets more tornados than the midwest; they're more numerous, but tend to be smaller than the monsters that go tearing through Kansas. It's an interesting experience, to be sure, but I usually have too much lingering hurricane/tornado trauma to feel anything other than terror at the prospect now.
I will admit, however, that I sorely miss the non-deadly summer thunderstorms in FL. Probably the only thing I do miss. Living on the ocean here has improved my storm reception a bit, but it's still not the same.
the sky was very beautiful last night! i love weather like that.
tornado weather is only quiet at first. the sky turns green and the weather feels perfect (to me). it sends chills up my spine to think about it. because you know soon after the eeriest freight train noise is going to come screaming through whipping everything including your senses out of control.
one of my earlier memories is of that sound and my dad ripping me out of my bed right before glass shattered down into it. it must have made an impact because i was only four or five! i just remember my uncle freaking out thinking he could hold the house up when we were all jammed into the closet!
I remember when I was little we used to sit on the front porch during tornado warnings and wait to see them touch down. My grandma would light candles and turn off all the lights. The crazy green light with the candlelight was eerie. I only ever remember seeing one and it touched down just a block from our house. I have no idea why my family thought it might be a good idea to stay upstairs and watch it go by but it was amazing.
If you didn't want to wait for Thursdays there is a daily farmers market located somewhere downtown that I believe is year-round. I've never been to it since it closes early in the afternoon but a quick search would probably help you locate it.
Lastly, I know exactly what you mean about people throwing away books. I rarely remember to recycle but I freak if someone mentions throwing away a book. I've toted boxes worth with me through more moves than I care to count just so they wouldn't be tossed.
