My Fellow Americans

I need to come up with some planning ideas for work about America for about 20ish 2-4 year olds. So far I've come up with ideas around three themes (I'd like to have five to have a week's worth ( Read more... )

A theme would be American music -- specifically jazz which is a thoroughly American form and/or rock n roll, at least prior to the British Invasion since all the early stuff was also purely an American art form.

Also maybe something to do with Hollywood or films, since again, an American art form. Which is not to say there aren't UK films! Just that Hollywood is one of our industries tha eclipses anyone else's (at least in terms of finances. I'd argue that most British films are probably superior to American ones. ;))

Hmmm think Hollywood would be a bit old for these littleuns. Rock & Roll might be fun though

Well, how about Disney then? Mickey Mouse is an all American boy, erm, mouse. :)

I live here, and I'm having trouble coming up with good ideas. I've got a few bad ones, though.

Disney theme: I'm not sure that the parents would like their little ones exposed to such blatant advertising.

Country/Western music theme: There's not much you can do with this. Plus, you've already got the Wild West theme, so there'd be some overlap.

Grunge theme: No. Just, no.

Sorry. It's just not coming to me.

EDIT: How about a Broadway theme?

I wouldn't do the Wild west, considering how unPC that could get.
I actually rather like the baseball one, even though I don't like baseball. too bad with all the peanut allergies you couldn't do that as a snack, but you could do popcorn, which is Very American. or potato chips, also very American.

We were thinking of hot dogs at some point, with the onions the children have grown, so we could do that on the baseball day.

Yeah, this would be a very unrealistic wild west.

As for chips, they'd be all "Whadya mean, those are CRISPS, silly Jenni"

I think Wild West is a great theme because it's a part of American history which not only shaped the way the country is today, but it's something the children will find fun. You can also do it in a way which does not need to emphasise "kickin' them Injun butts". Trying to pretend the attitudes of the Wild West did not exist isn't helping anyone understand living in harmony.

I think you'd be okay with the West actually, since at such a young age you're sticking to general imagery rather than going into detail.

Maybe a "Plants & Animals" theme? There are many that are indigenous to the Americas (bald eagle, bison, hummingbird, American lobster, cactus, corn/maize, etc.).

Or something with the big features at National Parks (Grand Canyon, the giant redwoods at Yosemite, Old Faithful at Yellowstone, etc.)? Might be a bit complicated though.

How about a casino theme? (just kidding)

Just out of curiosity why is the wild west not PC?

Probably not PC because of the atrocious way us whitefolk treated the Native Americans

Geez ....I wouldn't in a million years even consider the Wild West un PC. That happend 100's of years ago. It's history. There is such a thing as too PC pretty soon people won't be able to do anything because it will offend them.
