who knew travellers had such terrible taste in books? every time i go into a book exchange i have a hard time picking just because there is nothing to pick from. although i have ended up with some good things: short stories by Luis Sepulveda, El Tunel by Ernesto Sabato, The Old Patagonian Express by Paul Theroux (err, mixed feelings), Cancer Ward ( Read more... )

They certainly do. When I got back, I read everything -- starting pronto with Sandy's softcore (aka less sexy scenes even than usual) romance novels for divorcees, what a drag -- because I was so missing reading. Then I realized just 'cause you know the language doesn't make it worth it. Now I'm reading my first Margaret Atwood book, Oryx and Crake which being postapocalyptic suits me just fine. But I have a large stack of trashpicked is-it-worth-it reads including the best half of an entire Russian Lit class' reading list.

What does old Japanese man DO there? How bizarre.

That inventory made no sense to me.
