A pointless post (but then, aren't they all?)

The New York Times Magazine has a cover article this week on the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Our local paper was a bit ahead of the curve on this, since they published a series of articles titled "Afghanistan: The Forgotten War" about two years ago. It seems that Afghanistan was forgotten by most Americans not long after it began. ( Read more... )

That's an interesting contrast to Canada, where Afghanistan is top of mind due to the rapid increase in casualty levels in Afghanistan this year, when the CF began more offensive operations in the south in the area of Kandahar province. Fighting in the Pashmul/Panjwayi area in particular has claimed several lives recently, and there's plenty of wounded too.

If only we had secured the whole country instead of just Kabul before rushing off on the next adventure...

My sentiments exactly. Of course, they should have skipped that other adventure entirely. By not finishing the job they've left a larger mess to be dealt with. The problem we're seeing here is the ignorant masses are being left to believe that the Americans have left Afghanistan altogether, and that the Afghan National Army isn't involved in the fighting, neither of which are the case.

Of course, a friend of mine who was injured when an A-10 fired on his position and killed the driver of his vehicle probably would have been okay, at that particular moment, with the Americans being gone.
