my 100 favorite films

As some of you might know, I've been maintaining a complicated Film Viewing database which contains an incomplete (but growing) list of basically every film I've ever seen. One of the fun aspects of doing this is that I've set up a filtered view of this database which selects the films that I've given a rating of 9 or 10 to... thus auto-deriving a ( Read more... )

I cant give 10 or 9 to this films. Mb only to Alien or Persona (both 8-9 for me).

Did u see, for example, Duellists (1977), Giorgino (1994), Seppuku (1962), Se7en (1995) -- my 10s.

Se7en has some strengths, but for me it's an 8. :)

I know I've said this before, but your giant database makes me very happy. Is it possible for people who aren't you to sort by rating? I have a great urge to go through the sevens and up and add the ones I haven't seen yet to my netflix queue.

It isn't possible for you to sort, but I can produce whatever filtration scheme you'd like and make it a public HTML page. Seven and up? Done. Would you like it sorted by title, date, rating, or genre?

I'm thinking rating, 'cause that's the part I'm most interested in.

Two quick thoughts:

1) The Piano is one of three films that I am glad I've seen, but never want to see again. Eraserhead and Meet The Feebles are the other two.

2) I'm not fond of Se7en. Specifically, I have issues with the plot. Perhaps I"m taking it too literally, but the antagonist is too flawless for me to accept the film or the message it delivers. The protagonists have no chance whatsoever of success. The film is a cunningly-framed, moderately violent, and lengthy "straw man" argument.

I get what you're saying about not wanting to see The Piano again, and frankly I haven't seen it since it was in the theatres (I might want to revisit it to ensure that it still warrants "masterpiece" status).

Another film that I was glad to have seen, but didn't ever want to see again, was Cronenberg's Dead Ringers, which I did eventually cave in and watch a second time. It really is one of the saddest movies you will ever see.

As for Se7en... I'll agree with these flaws (which are part of the reason it's not a nine or a ten for me), but I find it to be an important film in terms of revitalizing the horror genre (the Saw films, this decade's only thriving horror franchise, would be impossible without Se7en, which may or may not be a point in its favor for everyone). Also, I do think it's masterfully shot and edited, and Pitt, Freeman, and Spacey all turn in good performances.
