I have to wonder if, without those final moments, if the film would be any more than an interesting but ultimately forgettable movie. They're certainly unforgettable.

Although Lemorne remains an interesting and horribly disturbing character. That moment when, as a boy, he decides "to go against what is predestined" and jump, for instance...

I've never seen the re-make. Have you?

No, but I read the Wikipedia summary to figure out how they changed the ending. Roger Ebert calls the remake "obscene."
