“So what’s next?”

“What do you mean?”

“My next conquest.”

Luke Snyder raised an eyebrow. He and Reid Oliver had just arrived at Luke’s house after a long but satisfying evening celebrating Reid’s new position as Oakdale Memorial’s Chief of Staff. The house was empty so they settled on the brown couch in the living room to have one of their customary evening chats before Reid departed for the night. Sometimes, the conversations were serious (I’ve never felt like this about anyone, Luke). Sometimes they’d be routine (But we eat there all the time. There are other restaurants, you know). Sometimes they’d be pointless (That frame is crooked) or entertaining (If you could have any super power, what would you choose?). Luke and Reid usually tried for the latter after a long day; therefore, tonight’s chat seemed to be headed that way.

“I’ve been valedictorian, Top Chess Player-Junior division, Head of the Neurology Department, and now Chief of Staff. What other position can I conquer?” asked Reid jokingly.

Luke smiled, grateful it was going to be of those talks, and pointed at Reid, “I think you should be the next mayor of Oakdale. Or better yet, how about governor of Illinois?”

“Think bigger, Mr. Snyder,” instructed Reid, as he leaned the right side of his body against the leather couch, with his arm supporting his head, and faced Luke.

“Senator?”

“Bigger.”

“President?” asked Luke, mirroring Reid’s position on the couch.

Reid reached out and tapped Luke’s nose. “Bingo.”

“I must say, Dr. Oliver, that you never struck me as someone with political aspirations,” said Luke.

“I’m not, but it’s fun to think about it, isn’t it? I mean, who doesn’t want to be President?”

Luke looked away.

“What?”

“Nothing.” Luke looked back up at Reid and quickly shook his head, his grin returning full force. “Okay, let’s say you are President of this great nation. Who would your Vice-President be? And to make this more interesting, you can only pick people from Oakdale to be in your cabinet.”

Reid rolled his eyes. “Oh, great, I’d be impeached before the inauguration.”

Luke playfully swatted Reid’s leg. “Come on, who would be your Vice-President?”

Reid looked up at the ceiling, deep in thought. “It’d have to be someone I can depend on, someone I really trust, someone who’ll always have my back.”

Luke blushed and reached out to hold Reid’s hand.

“Katie. I’d pick Katie,” stated Reid, looking back at Luke.

Luke immediately pulled back. “Katie?” he asked in a voice more high-pitched than usual.

“What’s wrong with Katie?”

“Nothing; I just thought you’d choose me as your second-in-command,” said Luke quietly.

“I almost did until I realized that I can’t choose anyone who might also have great aspirations and resort to desperate measures to push me out of the way and become President himself,” said Reid.

“I would not use such tactics,” protested Luke.

“That’s not what Oakdale University would say,” countered Reid with a bigger smirk than usual.

Luke’s cheeks reddened. “Who told you about that?”

“Katie.” Reid gently touched Luke’s arm. “It’s all right; I’m not judging you. I’m sure you had your reasons.”

Luke smiled appreciatively. “I guess Katie would be a good Vice-President.”

“Yup,” agreed Reid, cupping Luke’s chin, “and you’d be a great First Lady-uh, man, or whatever they’d call you.”

“That’s all I’d be-just the guy standing beside you?”

“Beside me, behind me, in front of me,” teased Reid with a wink.

“Reid.”

“What's wrong with that? You do it now.”

“Yes, but you’re not President now. I’d want a more important role in your administration,” declared Luke.

Reid nodded. “How about Chief of Staff, then? That’s the guy that tells the President and everyone else what to do.”

Luke’s face brightened as it only did when he was around Reid. “I could do that.”

“I’d appoint your grandmother Secretary of State since she seems to know someone in just about every country,” said Reid with a laugh. “And your dad could be Secretary of Agriculture because of, you know, the horses.”

“Aww, Reid,” murmured Luke, holding Reid’s left hand.

“What?”

“It’s nice that you’re appointing my family first.”

Reid shrugged. “Well, they run Oakdale already; figured they’d be okay running the country, too.” Luke slapped Reid’s leg again. “I wanted your mom for treasury, but after the mess with Mr. Montgomery, I think she’s better suited for Secretary of Housing seeing as she invites everyone she meets to live here.” Reid paused and thought for a moment. “Or is that your other grandmother down at the farm?”

“Two Secretaries of Housing?” asked Luke.

“No, Emma will be Secretary of Housing, and your mom will be Secretary of Human Services,” responded Reid, his fingers playing with Luke’s.

“What does that person do?”

“Basically, she’d need to know everyone’s business, which shouldn’t be a stretch for her, huh?” asked Reid.

Luke narrowed his eyes and pulled hard on Reid’s hand.

“And for Secretary of Defense-between Margo Hughes and Jack Snyder, I’m leaning toward the latter since he hasn’t ever needed help from two gay teenagers to solve crimes for him,” Reid proclaimed, his ocean-blue eyes twinkling as he looked questioningly at Luke.

“Katie told you?”

Reid nodded. “That’s why she’s my Vice-President.”

“Okay, who else would you appoint?”

“Well, we’re done with the Snyders. Now, for Attorney General, I’ll have to go with Tom Hughes-as a favor to Bob, of course, since he voted for me for Chief of Staff.”

“Hey, I voted for you, too,” said Luke, leaning his head closer to Reid’s.

“You’re already Chief of Staff and First Lady, Luke-what else do you want?”

Luke slapped Reid’s head. “Don’t try to be cute.”

“Who says I have to try?” asked Reid, kissing Luke before he could respond. Their kissing deepened as Luke tangled his fingers in Reid’s hair and Reid caressed Luke’s face with both his hands. After a good minute and a half, they broke apart.

“Wow, Mr. President, you are some kisser,” Luke whispered breathily.

“Don’t tell my wife,” Reid whispered back.

Luke raised an eyebrow. “I thought I was the wife, or husband, or whatever.”

“I want you to be my mistress. She-he gets to have all the dirty fun with the President,” stated Reid, running his hand slowly through Luke’s messy locks.

“If I was your wife-husband, I can guarantee that you wouldn’t need a mistress or lover or whatever,” Luke declared pointedly.

“I think I believe you,” Reid replied before leaning in and again capturing Luke’s ruby lips with his own.

“A good thing about being President: we’d get to live in the White House together,” said Reid as he and Luke parted. “That means I’d get to move out of Katie’s and you too could finally leave Mommy’s place.”

“Hmmm, that sounds nice.”

“It does, right?” inquired Reid as he stared into Luke’s adoring eyes, the eyes that made Reid want to forgo his imaginary President of the United States position to instead make Luke Snyder President of the World.

“So,” Luke said after blinking his glazed eyes (which always happened when he imagined a real future with Reid for a little too long) and continuing to plan his and Reid’s alternate lives as America’s First Couple, “you’ve said who you’d appoint as your cabinet, but what about your plans for the people? What would you change?”

“Equal civil rights for all.”

“Nice. What else?”

“Better health care and insurance plans,” listed Reid. “No one should be too poor to see a doctor.”

“And?”

“More financial assistance for college students, pre-med in particular. No one should go broke trying to become a doctor.”

Luke laughed.

“I’d change the marriage laws.”

Luke looked surprised. “Marriage, huh? You-you’d want that?”

Reid shook his head. “Oh, not for me. I’m talking about mandating a law where people are only allowed two marriages in their lifetime. I mean, look at Katie: she’s a great woman-God bless her-but exactly how many times has she been married? I think this law would save a lot of people a lot of heartache, especially in this town.”

“If you passed that law, your own cabinet would impeach you,” declared Luke. “Your Vice-President would take you out herself.”

“I guess my Chief of Staff would have to make sure that didn’t happen.”

Luke shrugged and leaned back against the sofa, crossing his arms. “If you haven’t pissed him off by then, maybe,” he retorted.

Reid reached out to touch Luke’s arm, but Luke moved further away on the sofa. Reid sighed, “Okay, what if I was to let my Chief of Staff pass a law-would he be nice to me again?”

Luke looked skeptically at Reid. “You’d let me? Seriously?”

“Since he also happens to be my wife, uh, husband, I think I’d have to,” said Reid, smiling softly and scooting closer to Luke. “What do you want to change, Luke?”

“I wish for all people to marry who they want.”

Reid’s hand grazed Luke’s cheek. “Ever the romantic, Mr. Snyder.”

“Would you support that, Mr. President?” Luke swallowed and covered Reid’s hand with his own. “Would you, Reid?”

Reid opened his mouth to say something and then abruptly shut it.

“It’s okay. You don’t need to answer that.” Luke sat back and began fiddling with his fingers.

Reid laughed. “As my Chief of Staff, I think you have to listen to what the President says."

Luke glanced at Reid. “I’m listening.”

“I would support that law, I would,” Reid firmly said. “Someday.”

“As Reid or as the imaginary President?”

“Both.”

A grin appeared on Luke’s face, and he inched closer to Reid. “I’d vote for you if you were running. I know you’d make an excellent President, just like you’re going to be an excellent Chief of Staff at Memorial.”

“And I think you’re a better choice for my Vice-President,” said Reid as he inclined his head toward Luke’s.

Luke laughed. “Oh, yeah, better than Katie?”

“I forgot Katie would bring Doogie along-I don’t want him anywhere near my administration.”

Luke nodded. “The Oliver-Snyder ticket. I like the sound of that.” He gazed at Reid, and Reid gazed back, both of them suddenly aware of the very serious turn tonight’s conversation had taken and knowing that they’d more than likely revisit this chat some time in the future. Tonight, however, both men smiled at each other before leaning in to kiss.

“So do I, Luke.” Reid whispered against Luke’s lips. “Someday.”
