I guess it's back to the Middle Ages for us. [It's been a while since the disappearance of the amusement park, but this is the first time that Buffy has spoken up about it. She's taking the disappearance of hair-dryers and a luxury spa quite badly. Or at least--that's the story. It's easier to mourn the loss of something already gone than to ( Read more... )

You know, no electricity, no television, and too many knights in shining armour clanking around and spreading chivalry like it's the plague.

Uhh... Still not ringing a bell. This is one of those Earth things, isn't it?

[Oh. Right. Gotta remember to appreciate those cultural differences, Summers.]

Definitely an Earth thing. Think of it as like practically ancient history, pre-anything useful or fun ever and filled with way too many monks. Not really the most interesting of Earth stuff if I'm gonna get honest with you.

If it were the Middle Ages there'd be a lot more flaming torches and disease.

[Since she, uh... was there. Briefly. Once.]

I'm bored [and frustrated], so what's your plan?

Well, substitute torches with candles and we can't be too far off. As for plans? Well, pretty much that was it. Coffee and donuts. Maybe spaghetti if I'm feeling adventurous.

I really want a microwave. And some terrible takeout Chinese. And a McDonald's. You know, I'm thinking it's a lot crueler than it seemed, giving us that place. Now that it's gone we're all just gonna remember stuff from home even more.

Want some company?

I never thought I'd say this. Really, I mean, I think it almost hurts to admit it but I miss mass-cooked over salted fried. And something that's a little less painful to admit is that I'd love some company.

Modern conveniences. Microwaves, television, phones. Lots of fancy twenty-first century Earth stuff. The kinda stuff that, I'm learning, tends to be not so well known by the folks here.

[A pause, a small chuckle.] And please? Don't worry about the whole miss thing. Just Buffy is fantabulous.

Just Buffy, then. [Terrible quip, but he gets what she's saying.]

Certainly not. I suppose most of us are from these Middle Ages you've mentioned -- or something similar. Most will be missing those conveniences, either way.

[The Slayer approves. After all, terrible quipping is like a second job to her. Or maybe a third.]

What about you? How'd you describe your world? I'm gonna go with the hunch that it's not all neon lights and fast cars.

The conveniences of modern life. Television, toasters, iPods.

Think the side order's put me off my appetite.

Yeah. That can happen. It's kinda icky, I guess, but I ended up developing some sort of behaviour modification every time we shared donuts during an all night research-a-thon. Back home--whenever bad things happened.

If it helps, it helps. Junk food is pretty good for a pick-me-up. Mom would probably disagree with me on that, buuut she's not here to hear.

My mom always knew, just by looking at me when I walked in the door, when to pull out the extra-buttery popcorn and the black and white movies. There's so much to be said for comfort food.
