Reading Illustrated Novels

On the day when this post was originally published, we shared artwork by Keith Thompson at the readergirlz blog. Thompson illustrated (among other things) the novel Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, the March 2010 readergirlz book pick.

I always felt the same way about that line-- it's a brilliant first line, but I don't quite agree with it. I've since decided that my opinion on the matter is: I prefer my nonfiction with pictures, I prefer my fiction with conversations, but they're not so necessary the other way around!

I've recently realized that I'm not very good at reading graphic novels. Somebody else's pictures don't tell as good a story to me as my own mental pictures do!
