It's February, and that means it's getting closer to cherry blossom season over at
Lake Balboa. Per usual, a bunch of us are watching the park to see how things are shaping up. Since
jinyo came up with the title of Sakura Watch a few years ago, it seems more than fair to stick with it.
Hopefully, we'll be able to get a good weekend or two out of the park this year. Last year, there wasn't much luck in terms of finding one weekend where the blossoms were all roughly in bloom at the same time. Let's hope for a change.
Previous Data Reports:
None from this year. Check out the
tagged posts to see items from past years.
NOTE: I'm going to post up Reference Report #2 immediately after this. So you'll see this change above pretty soon.
Current Prediction:
March 13-14th, +/- 1 week. This is pretty much the default prediction presuming no signs of things happening early. So far, I haven't seen anything to suggest that things are deviating from this at this point. If in doubt, if you're sewing for this, guess early (March 6th-7th). Note: On March 20th, Anime LA is hosting a
potluck picnic at Lake Balboa themselves. If the date happens to fall around that weekend, note that I won't plan anything and I'll just recommend that you guys attend that instead.
Pictures
I post the pictures so that others can see what I observed, and draw their own conclusions. Granted, sometimes it's a bit hard to tell what's going on without the context of the park, but it might just be that someone out there knows better than I do. Or is less lazy than me and is willing to go back into my archives and compare. :P

1.
January would be a bit early to see sakura in bloom. I normally just go early to make sure nothing weird is happening. At this point, we're mostly just looking at buds.
2.
::sigh:: Still empty. That'll hopefully be different in about 6 weeks or so.

These are all across different trees. There's some consistency, which is a good sign at least.

The previous favorite area, just past the duck nesting area. Unfortunately, it looks like they've removed about 3-4 of the trees that used to be here, leaving this area a bit more bare. That might make this area a bit too difficult to work with. :(

Sorry, indulging my inner artisté. A sad solitary shoe.

The bridges have been up since before ACC this last year. But it's good to see they'll be there.
18.
The riverbed, relatively dry.
19.
More blossom buds.

In every brood, there's always a show-off. I got lucky and found it this time. :D

Well, at least I can say if I don't see any more this year, I saw some cherry blossoms. :P
