You create textures so well with the pen: the smoky air around Jon Hamm, his itchy tweed Brooks Brothers suit, Paul's stubbly beard.
Whenever I watch Mad Men, I always want to get out the air freshener. The smoke-filled rooms are not an exaggeration in the world of advertising (and book publishing) in the 60x and 70s. I remember crying off my mascara one day in 1972 due to eye irritation caused by smoke.
It was the "smell" of so many rooms and places when I was growing up, it was hard to know what it was without.
Well, my son had some difficulty getting away with it as our house had no smokers.
But i remember being in the busiest bar-band i ever played in, in those years just before smoking was outlawed. It was like those images you saw of L.A. where a cloud hung over the place. Sadly, when smoking finally went, so did all the bars where a band could make some decent money.
Oh, well... cue the piano player and "As Time Goes By."
