my only kerouac fact......... artistq March 1 2010, 13:26:17 UTC
Jack Kerouac hung out at my dad's favorite restaurant, which was on my father's beat, in NYC, The Beatrice Inn.
This makes me cool..twice removed.

You don't really need extra coolness.... slatts March 1 2010, 13:37:02 UTC
...your TALL picture is right there next to the definition of coolness....

BUT....this is cool! As one of the key players of the BEAT writers, I wonder if Jack got the name from BEATrice?!?!

And your dad had a beat? As in walked a beat? As in an NYC policeman? interesting...

I have NEVER been accused of being cool!! Quite the dorky opposite!

Yep, Dad walked the beat. The Beatrice Inn was the place that we went in NYC for every "special" occasion (probably because we getting a 'cop-discount"). But they loved my Dad there and we enjoyed the VIP treatment. They were great people.
My 16th birthday--on the way to the John Denver Concert! (my first and only concert as a teenager--how tragic is that???)

We actually met a lot of people that were on my Dad's beat. Like the printer (who printed our invitations) and the jewelry store (where he bought our charm bracelets).
I know he loved that era, protecting those businesses and those good people. Back in the day.

Back in the day.... slatts March 1 2010, 17:55:12 UTC
Yes, my grandfather was a cop in our town. He knew everybody-and they knew him.

As a kid, I thought he was just like "round-bellied" police officers in my Golden Book series, being all friendly to old ladies, children and stray dogs (long before the "State Trooper soldier like look" became vogue.

But my gramp was like all the Irish (or many of them ) cops "Back in the day"-something a little above the law and not always on the straight and narrow....

Oh well, that was "Back in the day...."
