"Kris, give me the gun," Sabrina said softly.
Kris stood frozen, the gun still raised. The man she had killed lay like a crumpled puppet on the floor. In theory she'd done this deed a hundred times, but this time it was REAL.
Sabrina pried the gun from her fingers, pulled her close. "It's okay," she whispered, "it's gonna be okay."
Kris sagged against her, letting the taller woman bear her weight. "You promise?" she asked doubtfully.
"I promise."
But Kris suddenly saw the room fill with shadows, the ghosts of every life her victim had touched, and knew the promise was empty.
