Worse, perhaps, to be *in* the life instead of just being on the outside, like usual partners of first responders. They *know* more, and that would be so much harder to deal with....

Yes! That is one of the things I love about this relationship (and similar ones)...they both understand and have come face to face with these risks, they know the reality. So in a way they are more prepared for how things can go wrong, but it also makes those risks so much more real.
