"Do you love him?" Her voice was cool and level; her gaze, as she stared at him, steady.

He blinked. "What?" he managed.

A small smile touched her lips. "Silver," she said. "Do you love him?"

He blinked again. "I . . ." He what? He didn't know? He didn't want to tell her? He had no idea what love was? He didn't know if he was even capable of love? Any or all of those answers would be accurate. But he suspected none would satisfy her. Nonetheless, they were all he had.

However, before he could speak, she did so again. "He loves you."

He frowned at her. "Did he tell you that?" He saw her eyes widen slightly in surprise and he realised he'd taken a step towards her. She may not know all of his powers, only he, They and now Silver did, but his great strength was known about by all. He stopped where he was and demanded, //Well?//

She shook her head. "No. Of course he hasn't. But I know. I've always known," she added quietly. "Steel," now she put her hand on his arm. "It's all right."

//What is?//

She smiled and again refused to follow his lead by conversing with him via telepathy. "To care. And you do care. I know you do." He said nothing. There was nothing he could say. Instead she spoke again, her voice was gentle. "Why don't you tell him?"

//I . . .// "I don't know if I can," he finally said.

She nodded. Then to his surprise, put her lips to his cheek and lightly kissed him. "Find a way," she said quietly. "Before you lose him."

Later he recalled what she'd said, how she'd looked. She was correct; he had to find a way. He couldn't lose Silver. He simply couldn't.
