Steel sits in his austere sitting room, in what used to be his austere sitting room. Now small, shiny objects and pictures are dotted around the room.
They have nothing to do with him; they belong to Silver.
He looks at them in turn; he knows the exact day each one arrived. Silver is clever like that; he hasn't brought them all at once. Instead one by one they have appeared, spread out over several months.
Steel frowns as he spies a new one; that hadn't been there earlier in the day. He sighs and wonders if this one will be the last; somehow he doubts it.
For a moment he closes his eyes and thinks about Silver. Thinks about the element who is his lover.
Part of him, even now after nine months, cannot believe he is Silver's lover. Cannot believe he agreed to join with the man who, like Steel himself, epitomises his name in many ways.
From the moment Silver had kissed him and he returned the kiss, he had felt something he'd never expected to feel. Had felt something he still couldn't define.
Nine months ago they had come together; had joined with one another. And not a day has gone by in which Steel hasn't wondered how long it will last.
He knows Silver's reputation; he's amazed they are still together after nine months.
He is sure it cannot last. Silver is like quicksilver, fickle, prone to change his mind.
It cannot last. Silver will tire of him. Steel knows this. He wonders how much time he has left.
He looks again at the objects and pictures and realises that rather than annoy him, they should give him a sense of relief. Whilst they are there, whilst they still keep appearing, Silver will be too.
