Sometimes, when she’s under the water, Rogue just shuts her eyes and lets the rest of the world disappear. She remembers only one element of the world above, only one memory to which she chooses to cling more than any other. She remembers the Goddess who walks among the mere, living mortals. She remembers Ororo and all she once promised her to get her to return safely to the team who has since become a family to her too.

She’s been promised many things by many, different people over the years. Ororo was neither the first or the last to promise her that they would learn how to control her powers. She’s gained that control and lost it too a multitude of times. But what she remembers the fondest is the first time she was kissed by the Goddess, the first time she was kissed by anyone and did not hurt them. The tiniest of breezes had still kept their lips apart, but they had been so close that Rogue had had no trouble imagining that that wind had not been there. She had tasted Ororo, and she had carried that taste of wild, regal, graceful, and passionate power with her ever since.

She barely sees Ororo these days, but she hasn’t forgotten. She’ll never forget. Even if Stormy has forgotten all about her promise and the moment they shared that day, Rogue will always cling to it in her darkest moments -- and she knows too that even now all she has to do to call Ororo to her is to call her. If she says her name, she will be there, appearing like the magical woman she is. She will be there and do all she can to help her, just as she does for all the rest of her team mates.

But damn it if Rogue still doesn’t want to be more than just a team mate to that Goddess! She knows, however, that no mere mortal man or woman has the right to call a Goddess her or his own. She has no right to claim Ororo over anyone else. Logan, Remy, and Hank have all had her. T’Challa almost ruined her. Yet, even when they were with her, she was not theirs. She has and will always belong only to herself, as all the most beautiful wild things do.

Likewise, Rogue’s memory is her own, and no one can ever take it from her. She clings to it now and lets it play on in her mind to what should have been its inevitable conclusion and would have been had they not had to fly away to save the world yet again. She imagines Ororo’s mouth and fingers everywhere on her willing, then nubile body until she breaks from the water with a scream of passion throttling from her lungs.

The other X-Men watch her. None can guess why she’s truly screaming, none save one Goddess who watches her as the sun and its Mistress smiles.

The End
