one thing (the first, and 'biggest' thing) that comes to mind is that nurses are, or have been in my experience, the translators, the buffers, the liasons, between me (as either patient or family of patient) and the system (either hospital or hospice, for me). i haven't had any experience with long-term nursing care in the home, but that's what i get immediately when i think about 'nurse.' my advocate, my soft place to land, my guide. that's a hell of a lot to expect from a person, i know - - and i never would have, except that the nurses i have met keep on *doing* those things, each time shocking the hell out of me and making me beyond grateful. i iz spoiled!

so, when i think of a good nurse, i think of someone who has the skills of a translator, someone who can bridge the gap and make others feel comfortable in unfamiliar territory, someone who can guide another through difficulties while still make that person feel respected and empowered, as much as is possible.
