Huh.

I'll admit to doing a double take on this entry. I just recently started getting into Sherlock myself (only through episode 2, but heavily spoiled anyway) and I've been really struggling to weigh my enjoyment of it against the many, many things about it that I find problematic. Which is not to say you have to agree with me! Just, I was startled, given most of the reactions I've been encountering.

I don't like the aired ep one. I like the unaired pilot, and let that guide me in seeing- observing- the rest of them.

It's not at all the books, nor is it the classic adaptations. There's a lot that's not canon, and there's a lot of that leaves me scratching my head, again, esp in ep one (aired).

But from a certain standpoint (and excluding the aired ep one, which I feel detracts from the whole thing and should be deleted on the spot) there's something, something complete and direct, that gets to the heart of some archetypal relationships- I've not worked it out, and and it'll take me a while to parse it- and it's that to which I respond so strongly.

It's like the movie of Mary Poppins. It's completely wrong. And yet, somehow, it gets some essential truth of what P. L. Travers knew when she wrote her, and I love it for that, because that's all of Mary that some people will ever know, and she's another everyone should have at least a shoulder-brushing acquaintance with, for me.

There's an unaired pilot? I had not heard of this. Hmm. *investigates*

I think the problem I have is that I do like it so much. I'm completely drawn in, I love the characters, I flail incoherently about the editing, the fandom is extremely interesting- but when I take a step back I go, well, this does strike me as racist, sexist, ableist, classist...the classic fan dilemma, I guess, and it's not like I haven't had similar problems with other canons. I'm still kind of torn about it, though.

i can upload that for you if you like. all one (it's about 550mb) or in pieces, as you like.

absolutely. like so many, many things- there's SO much wrong- things I've worked most of my life to 'fix', or at least bring to notice- and at the same time, there's so much to enjoy.

it's a guilty pleasure.
i look at it as a way to open conversations about the things that bother me- ageism, racism, ableism, etc. - because it is so engaging. people i know who've seen it can't stop looking- which gives me the opportunity to remark on things i've noticed, because of fandom, because of meta, because of friends like you, which they don't know they've seen.
