I love your take on "In Celebration." I haven't read many fan reviews yet, but this one is one of the best I have read. If he's done well with a part that requires him to express a lot without speaking then I'm very happy; I know I'm in the minority, especially out of people who consider themselves a fan, when I feel he hasn't always mastered that on screen so this is great to hear.

I don't know what to ask. I guess I want to know about the different legs of your trip in general, non-fan related especially. I know you originally were going for a specific reason (a marriage, right?) and I'd love to hear about that. Did you get to meet any LJ folks while you were there? Had you been in Europe before, and if not were you able to fit in a lot of sightseeing?

I don't so much have a question about your trip or the play except for I wonder how he manages to do it night after night? I've yet to read a bad review about him so I wonder.... though I don't suppose anyone would see more than one or two performances to be able to compare if he was better or worse from the last time.

Anyhoo... again, I'm glad you got to go and thank you for sharing with us.

thanks.
actually xchasingtailsx did get to see it twice, and had some comments about how it's changed (the play) and he's changed as he gets to know it even better.

it's got to be hard. it's a difficult play, layered and dense, but muted at the same time by both time and distance, and in the writing itself as these are things this family, this couple and these sons, haven't explored in light of day or with each other, at all. they learn as we learn what it meant, what happened and happens now.

truly wonderful experience. could not have done it without encouragement from you all. blessings on your head.

I don't think you missed much by not knowing Sheffield. Truthfully it could've been anywhere in the north of England between Lancashire and Northumberland. With the accents a mix of Yorkshire, Geordie and Irish, it could have been anywhere, really. Anywhere that had a mining community. The setting was pure northern though, the way the house was furnished, and the way people are. Nothing much has changed there since 1969, except that we all have playstations and flatscreen TVs in the living rooms. :) And, he was so, so good. One of my early criticisms when I first saw Orlando (in LOTR and Troy) was that he has limited expression of emotions. Oh boy, how he's grown up since then. He was superb.

And, wait, you'd come back for a one day conference? Are you completely off your head?! :-D

well, only if i could add in a few other things. one more time to see the play, and maybe a side trip to manchester... it's a dream at this point though. too soon, i think, to be practical.

wasn't it wonderful? so good. xo
