It must have been the hardest thing for McCoy, as a doctor, to feel so completely helpless and impotent in a medical situation. And Spock was so stoic throughout, lending his strength to his bondmate.
McCoy had the additional worry of not being on the ship where Jim needed him, so he was pulled in two directions. Making the decision he was going to complete the mission must have been so hard, because it was the second time in his life that he was leaving a daughter behind. My heart went out to him.

McCoy's rather stunned reaction to being expected to become a father rang very true. He also seemed a bit overwhelmed when he was told he wasn't needed for the 'pregnancy.' And that even the sex of his child was being dictated.
I enjoyed reading how he managed to deal with things. And to finally make his own wishes known.
