I completely agree that your movie should not be about special effects, but about awesomeness.

That said, I still think that you should keep the goal of learning Final Cut Pro (assuming we can make it work reliably), because eventually your work and what you want to do with it is going to outgrow iMovie, and I would hate to see your art limited by the tools you use.

I'm going to see if I can find some tutorials or something that you can go through to help you learn it.
