I drove across one of the new I-35W bridge last night on the northbound side on my way home. I didn't get to drive across it yesterday morning because I had a dental appointment, and the clinic is closer if I drove the detour route on the 'back' side. And how awful for your Mom's friend. You just never know these days. People can have no symptoms for anything and them BOOM...it all comes crashing down. So sad. :@ (

I've read so many articles about this bridge in various engineering magazines over the past few months, it's crazy. The arched profile is probably because they lowered the highway at one end to gain more headroom under a couple of overpassing city streets. The old bridge and highway at either end had a total of six "exceptions" to minimum current design standards. The design-build team that won the project did so even though their bid was not the lowest because their was the only design that eliminated all six exceptions. That included the underpass clearances, lack of shoulders on the bridge, and insufficient sight distance on the ramps.
